E
SENECA II -W WILDLIFE BASELINE INFORMATION
PREFACE
Tab 11 Organization
Until 1998, Tab 11 of the Seneca II -W Mine permit application was a single section, presenting
information from wildlife baseline studies conducted in 1974, 1979, and 1982. For the 1998 Seneca
II -W South Extension Permit Revision application, Tab 11 was divided into two separate sections;
Section 11.1 and Section 11.2. Section 11.1 contains the entire lunaltered) contents of Tab 11 from
the previously approved permit application. Section 11.2 contains information from the 1997
supplemental wildlife baseline studies in the Seneca II -W South Extension Area. To avoid altering the
approved, historical document, the only aspects of the original baseline text that have been edited or
updated are this Preface and the Table of Contents for Tab 11.
Persons Responsible for Data Collection
Initial wildlife baseline studies were conducted from February through December 1974 by ERT, Inc.
These studies were, therefore, completed prior to the promulgation of Federal and State rules and
regulations regarding the nature of fish and wildlife resource information to be contained in a mining
• permit application. The general emphasis and intensity of those initial wildlife and aquatic
•
investigations were, however, established through consultation with Colorado Division of Wildlife
(CDOW) personnel.
Additional studies were conducted to update information for "important" species, as identified by the
CDOW, including elk, mule deer, sharp -tailed grouse, and raptors and to evaluate wildlife resources for
the Tie -Across Haul Road. These studies were conducted by ERT, Inc. (January through June 1979)
and an independent consultant, Chris Goertler (May and June 1982). Information was also obtained
from Jim Haskins (CDOW Conservation Officer), and Mike Lockhart (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Biologist). Chris Goertler organized and prepared a summary wildlife baseline report based on all
wildlife information available for the Seneca II -W area. This documentation has been formatted and is
presented as Section 11.1 of Tab 11.
Supplemental wildlife baseline data for the Seneca 11•W South Extension were collected in October
Revised 9198
. s.,:,t . ,.. ate: wade" -.• - ..'+s —g...., - - – – _ —_= _-•_b: =-=• 't
