species. All foliage was clipped within a vertical projection of the quadrat sides
Project number, plot number contents, date, and wet weight were recorded on each bag.
Upon return from the field, clipped samples were oven-dried at 105°C for 24 hours after
which they were reweighed and the dry weights recorded.
See Appendix 10-8 for a discussion of 1985 tie across haul road production sampling
methodologies.
Density. Shrub density on sagebrush and mixed brush vegetation types within the mining
2
area, the haul road vegetation types, and the related reference areas was measured in 4m
(2 m x 2 m) plots during 1980. The center point of a cove r-productivity plot represented
the lower left-hand corner of the shrub density plot. A shrub was defined as a
discernible crown from which one or more stems arose.
Shrub density in the Aspen affected and reference areas was sampled within 1 m x 50 m belt
transects located along the randomly oriented cover transects in 1983. Within these belt
transects, each shrub having its root crown within the boundary was counted by species and
the height of the first two individuals of each shrub species was measured. Trees below
breast height (1.3 m) also were counted by species. Shrub density data are presented as
number per 50 m2, number per hectare, and number per acre.
In 1983, tree density in the Aspen affected and reference areas was sampled using 5 m x
50 m belt transects or quadrats. Each quadrat had its long axis along the randomly
oriented cover transect line originating at a grazing exclosu re. Within each quadrat, all
trees greater than breast height (1.3 m) were counted by species, noted as live or dead,
and measured at breast height for diameter in cm.
Tree density data are expressed as number of stems per 250 m2, number of stems per
hectare, and number of stems per acre. Diameter data is presented as frequency per size
class.
See Appendix 10-8 for a discussion of 1985 ti e-across haul road density sampling
methodologies.
Livestock Carrying Capacity. The mine area herbaceous production data were used to
calculate cattle carrying capacity for each vegetation type. An animal unit month forage
•
C
•
12
