5h:1 v (20 percent), the existing ground will be plowed, stepped, or if in bedrock, keyed in a <br />manner which increases the stability of the fill. Toe material for embankments will be free of <br />organic material, coal or coal blossom, frozen materials, wet or peat material, natural soils <br />containing organic matter, or any other material considered unsuitable by the Division for use in <br />embankment construction. Material containing by volume less than 25 percent of rock larger than <br />6 inches in greatest dimension will be spread in successive uniform layers not exceeding 12 <br />inches in thickness before compaction. Where the material for an embankment consists of large - <br />size rock, broken stone, or fragmented material that makes placing it in 12 inch layers impossible <br />under 4.03.1(3)(d)(v), the embankment will be constructed in uniform layers not exceeding in <br />thickness the approximate average size of the rock used, but the layers will not exceed 36 inches. <br />Rock will be placed in a manner that will ensure proper placement in the embankment, so that <br />voids, pockets, and bridging will be reduced to a minimum. The final layer of the embankment <br />will meet the requirements of 4.03.1(3)(d)(v). <br />Each layer of the embankment will be completed, leveled, and compacted before the succeeding <br />layer is placed. Testing of the adequacy of compaction of the cut zone subgrade and fill zone <br />embankment will be by Proof Rolling, utilizing loaded mine haulage equipment as directed and <br />evaluated by the Mine Engineer. Proof Rolling will be conducted at intervals, elevations and <br />frequencies determined by the Mine Engineer. All Proof Rolls will be observed by the Mine <br />Engineer or designated representative. Any section of roadway subgrade, or any lift of roadway <br />embankment fill which yields excessively, in the judgment of the Mine Engineer or his <br />representative, will be reworked utilizing one of the following standard geotechnical engineering <br />methods: <br />i. Excavate the soft area to the depth designated by the Mine Engineer, moisture condition <br />(wet or dry as required) the material removed, replace and recompact the same material <br />in lifts as directed by the Mine Engineer. Repeat the Proof Roll test, or <br />ii. Excavate the soft area to the depth designated by the Mine Engineer, dispose of the <br />material excavated and replace it with select imported fill placed in lifts and compacted <br />as directed by the Mine Engineer. Repeat the Proof Roll test, or <br />iii. Excavate the soft area to the depth designated by the Mine Engineer, dispose of the <br />material excavated and replace it with imported Pit Run Gravel placed in lifts and <br />compacted as directed by the Mine Engineer. Repeat the Proof Roll test. <br />iv. The Mine Engineer may at his discretion direct that the replacement fill noted in items 1, <br />2, & 3 above will be placed on geotextile or geogrid where deeper subsurface conditions <br />make such action necessary and appropriate. <br />The Mine Engineer or designated representative will prepare and maintain records of all <br />subgrade and embankment Proof Roll tests and of any remedial work undertaken as a result of <br />said Proof Roll tests.
