Cultural Resource Historic Properties Treatment Plan for BK -2-082818 Colowyo Coal Company
3.2.2 Site Specific Data Recovery Tasks
The following data recovery tasks will be applied to the site in support of the research design. The
two site specific tasks are: A) Feature Data Recovery and B) 1 by 1 m Test Unit Excavation.
Feature 1 is a possible thermal feature of dark stained sediment with charcoal and five pieces of
sandstone heat altered rock. As currently exposed, it measures 25 cm long by 30 cm wide.
Feature depth is currently unknown. The feature will be fully excavated as outlined in Section
3.2.3.2. The recovered material and samples will be analyized as outlined in Section 3.3.
A 1 by 1 m test unit will be excavated within the remaining intact sediments either around or
adjacent to Feature 1. The unit will be exacavated using the methods outlined in Section 3.2.3.1.
The unit will provide a controled means for investigating the potential of a possible living surface
in which the feature was created and utilzied. Sedimentary profiles of the unit walls will be drawn
of the remaining intact sediments on site. The profiles will assist in the geoarchaeological and
taphonomic assessments of the site.
3.2.3 Data Recovery Methodology
The following methods are based on current archaeological theory and method. Documentation
of on-site work will utilize Tetra Tech's cultural resource electronic and paper based recordation
forms. Form types include, but are not limited to, photographic logs, artifact catalogs, excavation
unit, feature excavation, and daily progress tracking forms. The Principal Investigator (PI) will be
responsible for reviewing all forms and data collected in the field on a nightly basis to ensure the
data is correct as well as stored and filed properly.
An electronic 1 by 1 m grid with a primary datum will be established over the site using the Trimble
GEOXM. The GPS will also be used for artifact point provenance, overall site mapping, and
structural feature mapping. UTM coordinates will be recorded in NAD83, Zone 13 North. The 1
by 1 m excavation unit(s) will correlate to the overall gird. Photographs will be taken using a digital
camera with at least a seven -mega pixel resolution. Site overview photograph positions will be
GPS point located. Project photologs will be maintained and record the date, camera, exposure
number, subject, orientation, and GPS derived UTM coordinates for overview photographs.
Collected artifacts will be placed in plastic bags with labels detailing the bags content, catalog
number, provenience information, name of collector, and date of collection. Collected artifacts will
be transported to Tetra Tech's Salt Lake Office laboratory for cleaning and analysis. Collection
process for surface artifacts will also be applied to subsurface artifacts. Artifacts recovered from
screened matrix will be collected per general class with appropriate provenience information for
sorting and analysis in a laboratory setting.
3.2.3.1 Unit Excavation
At least one excavation unit will be opened as needed to further investigate the potential for further
subsurface cultural material and/or to define a potential living surface. The PI will use professional
judgement to determine if a signal, multiple, or even blocks of units are excavated. Any
encountered subsurface artifacts will be electronically point provenienced, cataloged, then
collected.
All 1 by 1 m excavations will be completed using manual excavation techniques. A qualified
archaeological technician will hand excavate using a flat bladed shovel and trowel as necessary.
Tetra Tech June 29, 2018 7
