overburden may be used for backfilling if needed. Topsoil and overburden will be kept separate
and not mixed and each type will be clearly identified in the field.
The expanded operation will consist of three Phases,to include the existing mined pit. Phase
One will be approximately 19.16 acres (which includes the original 9.84 acre 110 Permit),
Phase Two, 15.62 acres and Phase Three, 13.21 acres. Each Phase will be mined separately.
The total acres to be stripped of topsoil in any given year will be approximately 1/4 tol/3 of the
proposed affected acres in each Phase. Worst case, the area being stripped and mined should
not exceed about 5 acres.
Mining will begin by finishing the excavation in the existing 110 pit area(Phase One) and then
proceed to Phase Two. The last Phase to be mined will be Phase Three. By the time Phase
Two is reached, two-thirds of Phase One should be under reclamation except for the overburden
stockpile and the material process site, if kept in Phase One.
(b) Earthmoving:
Earth moving consists of first removing topsoil, then any overburden and finally aggregate.
The resource lies beneath the topsoil to an estimated depth of from 10 to 17 feet or more feet.
Once mining is nearing completion, the final slopes will be mined at a 3H:1 V slope. These
slopes will then have topsoil replaced and the area seeded to the approved seed mix.
(c) Water diversions and impoundment:
No diversions are planned.
There are several ephemeral drainages which drain to the north of the proposed expansion area.
Internal mine access roads will cross these drainages. Appropriately sized culverts will be
installed so as not to impede storm water runoff. No diversion or impoundments are planned.
(d) The size of the area(s) to be worked at any one time:
Total acres to be stripped in a given year will be up to approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of a phase. For
example, the largest phase, Phase 1 (the area of the original 110 permit) could initially affect as
much as 5 acres, dependent upon the Town of Limon needs.
(e) An approximate timetable to describe the mining operation:
This is an ongoing, intermittent mining operation. The expected life of the mining area is 25 to
50 years, depending on The Town of Limon needs. We estimate the amount of mineable acres
by phase is as follows:
24
