Coal Mine Waste Piles: Ditch cleaning material has been placed, but not spread, on top of gob pile #2.
Bowie Resources employs "Smart Ditch" HDPE ditch liners at various locations throughout the mine site.
These work well when drainage can be precluded from undercutting the liner. The drainage routing off
of the top of Pile #2 is undercutting the smart ditch and the downstream channel is eroding. All drainage
reports to sedimentation ponds; however, this creates a maintenance issue for Bowie. DRMS is currently
reviewing Technical Revision application #115 which would reconfigure, rock line, and stabilize this
diversion channel.
Bowie Resources has installed small straw wattles as a series of check dams along the D -D7 ditch at the
top of gob pile #4. The wattles are properly keyed -in and functioning to slow runoff velocity and
decrease erosion within the channel.
Support Facilities: The facilities area is orderly and well -kept. Belts have been removed from conveyor
systems, but the structures remain. Slopes in the area are stable and have very good grass cover.
The Terror Creek vent shaft area is stable. The vent shaft is permanently sealed and backfilled, and the
pad is fenced to prevent access. Straw bales and silt fence are intact and properly keyed to function as
intended. No evidence of off-site sedimentation was observed.
Maintenance items noted:
• Culvert clean out / repair:
o The culvert outlet on the south side of the Fire Mountain Canal Bridge is approximately
40% clogged and should be cleaned, and
o The culvert inlet routing water from the gob piles to Pond D is damaged. Sediment has
accumulated in this sump and the top of the culvert has been bent down, decreasing the
flow capacity. Recommend cleaning the sump and jacking the culvert open to ensure
adequate flow capacity.
• Pond F is due for routine maintenance (pond clean-out)
No enforcement actions were taken as a result of this inspection.
