Rule 2: Permits
woody production will be collected. Cover sampling can include basal and canopy cover. Basal cover is
determined by whatever the vertical hit is closest to the ground plane.
LCC proposes to establish a minimum density of 500 shrubs per acre on revegetated oak/pinyon pine
communities. This density is proposed to enhance wildlife habitat, but not adversely affect grazing capacity
or forage availability for livestock. Shrub seed is included in the seed mixture proposed for the oak/pinyon
community type. Shrubs will also be established in the grassland area of the surface mine in shrub plots. A
shrub standard of 500 stems per acre will also be applied to shrub plot areas in the disturbed grassland areas.
Species proposed for planting correspond to the species which are conspicuous components of -the -pre -mine
communities and can be expected to succeed on the post- mining landscape. This standard is not intended to
match the pre -mine community nor the historic record, however, it was established to provide a shrub
component to the revegetated community which would be consistent with the regional setting, long-term
reclamation goals, and reclamation requirements of management agencies. Gambel oak is not proposed for
planting because seed is difficult to acquire, seeds are too large for most seeding equipment, and success of
this species from seed is low, however, this species may be transplanted. Pinyon pine is not proposed for
planting because seed is difficult to acquire and success of this species from seed is low.
Species diversity data obtained from the cover data collected from the revegetated areas will be compared
to a set standard proposed by LCC. The standard for revegetated grassland and oak/pinyon pine
communities would be to have two perennial cool season grasses and one perennial warm season grass
comprise from 5 to 30 percent each and one perennial forb of 5 percent of the overall species diversity.
The cover requirement for the perennial forb may be met by totaling individual cover values for up to
three perennial forb species, if needed. A shrub component will also be included in both reclaimed
vegetation types. Table 2.05.4-5 presents a summary of the success standards for reclamation.
The Shannon -Weiner Index (HI) will be calculated for these categories of plants from cover data
with the following formula:
H1= E Pi log Pi
Pi=Ni/N
Ni = dominance measure for species (species cover)
N = The sum of all species dominance measure (total vegetative cover)
Thus, P, is equal to relative cover composition. Species diversity will be considered successful when
the Shannon -Weiner Index of the revegetated area is equal to or greater than the standard.
TR -20 Page 2.05-74 5-4-2018
TABLE 2.05.4-5 LORENCITO CANYON MINE
SUMMARY OF STANDARDS FOR BOND RELEASE
Sampling Type
Phase H
Phase III
Grassland
Cover
90% confidence interval of Reference
90% confidence interval of Reference Area.
Area.
Species Diversity
Perennial grasses: 2 cool and 1 warm
Perennial grasses: 2 cool and 1 warm season 5
season.
to 30 percent each.
1 perennial forb.
1 perennial forb of 5%.
