Site Description for the Poorman Mine Prospect (Exhibit B )
The Poorman vien system is accessed via the Poorman cross -cut adit that horizontally inters the hill
side in a northerly direction. Rock is removed from the adit with small rail cars and all underground
equipment is powered by compressed air. No water drains form the mine and none of the rock types
encountered in any of the underground excavations contain sulfide or other potentially acid forming
minerals. Some of the minerals encountered are carbonates.
• Surface Vegetation and Soil Characteristics
The hill side surrounding the Poorman Mine Prospect mainly is covered with Lodgepole Pine
trees but lower in the valley a few hundred feet to the south, Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir and
Alpine Fir are present. Between these trees, the forest floor is covered mainly with pine
needles and occasional paths of grass. Rocky liken covered boulders are common. Grasses
in this area include but may not be limited to Mountain Brome, Indain Rice Grass, Blue
Grama Grass, Blue Wild Rye and Wheatgrass.
The soil cover in the area includes very thin A and B horizons but may have very thick C
horizons. The A and B horizon contains a 1 to 4 in thick layer of organic material that is
mainly composed of pine needle, leaves and decomposed branches with abundant rock
fragments. The C horizon is often, in the permit area from 15 to 25 feet thick and is sandy
with abundant large rock fragments. In places, clay is present. In the permitted area, the rock
making the soil cover was a granitic gneiss thus the soil is composed of fragments of quartz,
aluminum silicates, inosilicates and phyllosilicates.
• Man Made Structures
The Nearest man made structure to the Poorman Mine Prospect is a power line and it is
3,800 feet to the south. The nearest inhabited dwelling is 4,100 feet to the East. A map
showing these locations is provided as Figure 3 of this report.
• Hydrologic Concerns
The current underground exploration activities are far above the water table and no water is
encountered in the areas of the mine actively being excavated. In the last 36 years since the
current permit has been in place, no discharge of water has taken place. It is not anticipated
that any discharge of water will take place in the future of this operation. The water table is at
least 100 feet from the surface which is the maximum depth of the active workings.
The nearest stream is the upper head water of trail creek. The stream flows only in the spring
and part of the summer. From the Poorman Adit portal, the nearest portion of this stream is
575 feet directly south and 240 feet lower in elevation. During the spring, this stream has a
maximum flow rate of 40 gallons per minute based upon previous measurements.
• Wild Life in the Area of the Poorman Mine
Wild life observed at the Poorman mine includes but may not be limited to:
• American black bear, Ursus americanus
• American marten, Martes Americana
• Bats, Corynorhinus townsendii
• Bats, Myotis Ciliolabrum
• Bats. Myotis Volans
