Linden Ave
Trinidad, CO 81082
Re: Arnold Gravel Pit
Dcarmr. floret tmp-
Thank you for the opportunity to provide input an the proposed Arnold Gravel Pet project in Las Animas
County, located at SE4 of NW4 of Township 28S Range 52W Section 28. This letter is in response to
your request for comments on January 3, 201 S.
One of our goals at Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is to provide complete and timely information to
all entities who request comment an matters within our statutory authority and our mission, which is to
perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and 10 provide
enjoyable and austainablc outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future
generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.
District Wildlife Manager (DWM) Natalie R=mker recently visited the project site. Most of this site
cousi:&ts of rangeland, and includes n portion of the Johnny Creek drainage, which is an ephemeral creek
system. Although wildlife was not sem during the site visit, it is expected that a variety of small and large
ntammais, turkey, reptiles, song bins, and raptor species would utilize this area regularly.
Currently, CPW policy directs our efforts towards proposals that potentially have high impacts to wildlife
and wildlife habitat, with an emphasis on large acreages. critical habitats, wildlife diversity, and ei%ccls aro
species of special concern. Due to the small ac reaRe and high availability of undisturbed habitat adjacent
to the proposal site, impacts of the dcvclopmeai may be characterized as minimal. This does not mean
that the landscape has no valac to wildlife. CPW encourages your initiative in promoting good land
stcwandsiup with the planned reclamation efforts at the end of all mining upc rations.
Again. CPW appreciates the opportunity to comment on this project during the planting phase. if you
have any questions, please contact DWM. Natalie Retmekcr at 719 980.0025.
Sincerely,
1
'rravis Black
Area 12 Wildlife Manager
Cc' Dan Prrnllow, Souibeas Region Manager
t. a 0. C -:ere. f*r-Ka.
