Limited Geological Evaluation
Exploratory Coring,Rose Red Granite Quarry
Lyons,Colorado
LIMITED SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION AND LABORATORY TESTING
Subsurface exploration for the project was conducted in August of 2017. Three test
holes were advanced using ODEX (air percussion) and HQ wireline coring techniques to
depths of about 50 to 51 feet at location proposed for quarry. The test holes were
advanced using a truck-mounted drilling rig to evaluate the subsurface conditions as well
as to retrieve samples for laboratory testing and analysis. A GROUND engineer directed
the subsurface exploration, logged the test holes in the field, and prepared the samples
for transport to our laboratory. Depths at which the core samples were obtained are
shown on the test hole logs.
The approximate location of the test holes are shown in Figure 1. Logs of the test holes
are presented in Figures 2 through 5. Selected photos of the core samples are
presented in Appendix B.
Samples retrieved from our test hole were examined and visually classified in the
laboratory by the project engineer. A limited suite of laboratory testing of soil samples
was performed — specific gravity test and unconfined compressive strength. Laboratory
tests were performed in general accordance with applicable ASTM protocols. Results of
the laboratory testing program are summarized below.
SUMMARY OF LABORATORY TESTING RESULTS
Test Hole Depth Specific Gravity Unconfined Compressive
Strength
1 36 2.624 -
1 45.5 - 19,580 psi
2 10.5 2.594 -
3 29 - 12,020 psi
3 32 2.605 -
The results of the laboratory testing were generally consistent with published ranges of
granitoid rocks.
Job No. 17-3043 GROUND Engineering Consultants,Inc.
