implemented (please see Temporary Seed Mixture section below). At times, the size or shape of
the retopsoiled areas and shape of the reclaimed area in relation to a management unit may be
insufficient to warrant establishment of the perennial Irrigated Pasture/Cropland species initially.
When this occurs, and the period before establishment of permanent Irrigated Pasture/Cropland
will extend beyond a year, a temporary seed mixture will be used (please see Temporary Seed
Mixture section below). This mix will provide interim stabilization as well as organic matter
benefits when incorporated during tillage and seedbed preparation prior to seeding of the
Irrigated Pasture/Cropland seed mixes.
2.3 Seed Mixture
At the request of the surface landowner the seed mix that will be planted on the Irrigated
Pasture/Cropland is as follows:
Seed Mix #5 - Irrigated Pasture/Cropland
Species Scientific Name
Common Name
PLS/Acre
Medicago Sativa
Alfalfa
18
Total
18
Note: Alfalfa seed must be inoculated with a specific strain of Rhizobium bacteria. 70 lbs/acre of oats
may be planted as a first year cover crop if necessary.
2.4 Irrigation Designs
Areas that are to be reclaimed as Irrigated Pasture/Cropland will be irrigated using sprinkler
irrigation. Map 2.05.5-1: Postmining Land Use shows all areas to be reclaimed as Irrigated
Pasture/Cropland.
The calculations for irrigation systems are shown in Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-1. These
calculations were made using the irrigation design worksheets from the Colorado Irrigation
Guide and the NRCS National Engineering Handbook Section 15, Chapter 11. The extent of
irrigation will be based on the amount of shares that are available to them from the Colorado
Cooperative Company (CCC Ditch) for the reclaimed areas. The designs are based on the NRCS
calculations with accounting for 6 days out of 7 days for operating the system, allowing one day
off for rest, unforeseen issues, system maintenance, family commitments, etc.
2.5 Pasture Management
Irrigated Pasture/Cropland should be able to attain a good level of productivity with the seed mix
referenced above under continuing and adequate management inputs. This includes scheduled
irrigation, fertilization and grazing management or proper harvest methods. Annual fertilization
of Irrigated Pasture/Cropland is a typical management practice to maintain plant vigor and
Section 2.05.4(2)(e) Page 4 of 14 January 2018 (PR -02)
