Transit Mix Concrete Co.
444 E.Costilla Street,Colorado Springs, CO 80903 Office: (719)475-0700 Fax: (719)475-0226
Types of Explosives Used
Types of explosives to be used for blasting at Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry based on site
conditions and applications are:
• Bulk Explosives
o Emulsion- An water resistant explosive material containing
substantial amounts of oxidizers dissolved in water droplets
surrounded by an immiscible fuel, or droplets of an immiscible fuel
surrounded by water containing substantial amounts of oxidizer
(pumped) (Primary Bulk Explosive used at Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry).
o ANFO—Prilled Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil a typical bulk
explosive used for blasting in dry holes. (augured)
o A blend of Emulsion and ANFO (augured blend)
• Packaged Explosives
o Emulsion—An explosive material containing substantial amounts of
oxidizers dissolved in water droplets surrounded by an immiscible
fuel, or droplets of an immiscible fuel surrounded by water containing
substantial amounts of oxidizer and mixed with prilled Ammonium
Nitrate. (Explosive, Blasting, Type E, 1.1 D, UN 0241 II or Explosive,
Blasting, Type E, 1.51), UN 033211
o Slurry/Water Gel—An explosive material containing substantial
portions of a liquid, oxidizers, and fuel, plus a thickener. Also contains
some amount of prilled Ammonium Nitrate. (Explosive, Blasting,
Type E, 1.1 D, UN 0241 II)
o Cast Booster—detonator sensitive, high density, high energy
molecular explosive. Packaged in plastic container with an internal
through-tunnel and detonator well for easy application with either
electric, electronic or nonelectric detonators. (UN 0042 Boosters, 1.1 D
PG 11)
• Explosive Blasting Accessories
o Initiation System
■ Nonelectric MS Detonator—NONEL—Used in hole to initiate
the cast booster. A detonator that does not require the use of
electric energy to function. Uses shock tube instead of leg
wires to transmit blasting signal. The shock tube is a small
diameter plastic tube containing reactive material used for
initiating detonators. It contains only a limited amount of
reactive material such that the energy that is transmitted
through the tube by means of a detonation wave is guided
through and confined within the walls of the tube. (Detonator
assemblies, nonelectric, 1.1B, UN 0360 PG 1I or Detonator
assemblies, nonelectric, 1.413, UN 0361 PG II)
6
