• range sites is discussed in Section 2.3.2. The following detailed descriptions
of these range sites plus range site C which has a big sagebrush -grass vegetation
type, are based on 1979 and 1980 field data.
2.3.3.1 Production
Range site A is represented by the mountain shrub vegetation type on north and
east slopes and above 7,200 feet.
In 1979 and 1980, total current annual growth (CAG) of the herbaceous fraction on
this range site was sampled for production. Methods are described in Section
4.4. In 1979, mean production on range site A was 69.52 grams per square meter
(g/m2) and 73.44 g/m2 in 1980 (Table 2.3-12). The 5% increase in production
in 1980 is probably due to greater than normal precipitation received at the mine
• site in the spring of 1980.
Production in range site B, (mountain shrub type below 7,200 feet on west facing
slopes) was 35.44 g/m2 in 1979 and 50.97 g/m2 in 1980. In other words, pro-
duction in 1980 was 143% of production in 1979. Again, this is attributed to the
above average spring precipitation in 1980.
Range site C, (big sagebrush -grass type) also showed a net increase in production
being 64.79 g/m2 in 1980 versus the 1979 mean production of 44.74 g/m2. This
range site increased production by an undetermined amount since in 1979 all CAG
of all lifeforms present were sampled. In 1980, only the herbaceous fraction was
sampled. Therefore, precise comparisons cannot be made for 1979 and 1980 pro-
duction.
2-99
