Shovel tests 1 and 2 were placed in the location of the previously recorded mann (STI,
mano, not relocated) near the southern periphery of the site, and a suspected upright slab (ST2)
near the newly established western periphery of the site. Cultural artifacts were not recovered.
A heat reddened pebble (FS #1) exposed in fill dirt from a rodent hole suggested the
possibility of a subsurface thermal feature. In an effort to determine the nature of this artifact,
Test Pits 1 and 2 were established in its vicinity. Each pit measured 0.5 meters east -west by 2
meters north -south and were laid out adjacent to one -another to form a 1 by 2 meter square. A
vertical control datum was established in the northwest corner of Test Pit 1. Test Pit 2 was
excavated to a total depth of 30cm below present ground surface. Diffuse charcoal flecks were
encountered at depths between 15 and 17cm below vertical datum in the northwest corner of
the pit. Only one artifact, a chert microflake (FS #3), was recovered at a depth between 1 to
I Ocm. Due to the paucity cultural material, excavation of Test Pit 1 was halted at a depth of
5cm.
Test Pit 3 was established in an area measuring 50cm north -south by 5m east -west near
the overgrown two -track as it appeared that artifacts (a chopper, mano, and flakes) were being
exposed due to erosion from the abandoned track. Excavation reached average depths of 4-
1 Ocm below present ground surface at which point bedrock was contacted. The far northeast
corner of the pit reached a maximum depth of 23cm below present ground surface. Cultural
material was uncovered exclusively from the southwestern 2 meters of the pit and includes: one
possible mano fragment, eight flakes, a piece of shatter, and a cobble fragment. Depths of the
artifacts ranged from 0-1Ocm below present ground surface.
The soil, Hesperus loam, is found on plateaus and mountainsides and is well drained
and formed from colluvium and residuum derived from sandstone mantled by basalt rock
fragments (USDA NRCS 2004).
Extensive testing of the site has determined that cultural manifestations are sparse and
limited to surface or shallow (<10cm) subsurface contexts. Despite few charcoal flecks and
one very small piece of possible fire -cracked rock, no definitive evidence of a thermal feature
could be found and research potential of the site has been exhausted.
Evaluation and Management Recommendation
The site was originally field evaluated as "need data" (2014). Subsequent testing of the
site revealed that cultural material is limited to surface or shallow subsurface deposits. No
definitive evidence of features with potential to yield additional information important to the
prehistory of the region was encountered. Accordingly, the site is field reevaluated as not
eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. No further work is
recommended.
37
