ST5 fill was sifted through 1/8" screen with the following results: 31 flakes (including
18 that are categorized as microflakes) at the 1- l Ocm level (FSs 199 and 210), 20 flakes and a
mano fragment at the 10-20cm level (FSs 198, 215, and 216), and an additional 4 flakes from a
mixed 10-40cm "wall clean-up" level (FSs 206 and 207).
Shovel Test 6 (at 1N3W). This 40cm x 40cm test was conducted to enlarge Auger Test
46, in which a 2 metate fragments were found at 10-14cm (FS 176) along with a fragment of
charcoal, heavily oxidized sandstone, and a fragment of dark gray ("burnt") sandstone. The fill
was cleared to a depth of 25cm; however, no additional fragments of the metate or any other
cultural materials of note were found.
9.3 Test Trenches
Three test trenches were established on the site for the purpose of a) determining the
horizontal extent of the cultural deposits; b) establishing the location of loci of artifacts,
features, and activity areas if any; and c) obtaining a trans -site profile exposure of the
subsurface deposits. These trenches were set up along established gridlines (Figure 2) and
were constructed at only 25cm in width in order
to stay within the established parameters of the
scope of work.
Test Trench 1 was laid out to measure
30m in length, extending north from Datum
along the 0 -East line and terminating at 30NOE
(Plate 4). For provenience control TTI was
divided into six 5m -long segments (A -F), and
each of these segments into 1 m -long test units
(each measuring lm x 25cm), labeled A-1, A-2,
and so forth up to F-5. Due to the lack of
integrity noted in the sub -surface deposits and
limitations of the scope of work for test
excavation, only the following units were
excavated: B-1, B-3 through D-2, E-1, and E-3 -
to the west of the 0 -East grid line. All
excavation was conducted in arbitrary 10cm level
and the removed fill was screened through 1/4"
mesh hardware cloth.
17
Plate 4.
