variable and moderately dense inclusions of rock fragments, some of which exhibit heat -
reddening.
Sifting the fill through 1/4" screen, five flakes were collected from the 0-1Ocm level
(FS40), 1 from 10-20cm (FS42), 2 from 20-30cm (FS43), none from 30-40cm, 6 from 40-50cm
(FSs 46 and 47), and 2 flakes (FS51) and a possible ground stone fragment from 50-60cm
(FS49). Flecks and small fragments of charcoal were found at 10-18cm, 30-40cm, 40-50cm,
and 50-60cm (FSs 41, 44, 45, 48, and 50). Mixed with numerous unaltered pieces of
sandstone, oxidized, pebble -sized fragments were noted at all levels from 10-60cm that ranged
from reddish -brown to orange to yellowish -orange.
Shovel Test 4 (located off-site at 13; 288476mE; 447648lmN). For the purpose of
determining if the site extended down onto a level bench that is situated 22m to the south and
approximately 30 to 35 vertical feet below the end of the prominence, ST4 was opened. This
relatively large shovel test measured 45cm x 55cm and was cleared to a depth of 35cm. No
lithic debitage, charcoal, oxidized rock or any other evidence of cultural remains were found in
the test, using 1/4" mesh screen, and the bench was determined to be outside of the boundary of
site 5MF7762.
The upper fill in the test consisted of pale brown (1 OYR 6/3) loamy clay that became
more highly mineralized and carboniferous, and more yellowish, in the deeper levels. The
amount of highly decomposed sandstone fragments also became more frequent in the soil
below 10cm until, at the 35cm level, it made up over 80% of the fill. Evidence of stream -flow
scouring was present in the walls of the test — not unexpected due to the bench's proximity to
the entrenched stream channels descending from both the northwest and northeast.
Shovel Test 5 (at 6N2W). Based on the amount of oxidized rock found at the 10-15cm
level of adjacent Auger Tests 81 to 83, and the charcoal present in these ATs and in nearby
ST3, ST5 was opened at the location in search of thermal features and the source of the
scattered charcoal. Additional fragments of charcoal and oxidized rock, and dark grayish -
brown soil were discovered in what grew into a 52cm x 32cm shovel test that extended to
40cm below the pgs in portions of the test. Based on the presence of an increase in the amount
of charcoal present in the western half of the test, possible ash staining in the soil, and an
upright sandstone slab exposed in the south wall, the excavations at what became known as the
Feature 2 Locus (remnants of a potential in situ thermal feature) evolved into Test Pit 3, as
described in the section entitled Grid -oriented Test Pits .
16
