Plate 17. Site 5MF948, Panel 8, detail view showing two faint abraded
lines.
distinct purpose in the creation of the rock art. The site has a Feeling and Setting which is
evocative of a prehistoric/protohistoric period due to its location in an occupied overhang
shelter, and as the environment and natural geologic features are representative of the setting
during prehistoric times. The shelter is of natural Design and was inhabited by people who
recognized its value and utility. The site demonstrates Association as the features on the site
demonstrate an association with prehistoric and native lifeways.
The site does not demonstrably meet (NRNP) Criterion A (associated with events that
have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history), or Criterion B
(associated with the lives of persons significant in our past). The site does, however, meet
Criterion C (represents the work of a master, or possessing high artistic value and
representing a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual
distinction) and Criterion D (likely to yield information important in prehistory), based both
on the rock art, and the subsurface findings in the form a stone tool, burnt bone, and charcoal
fragments. The potential for additional buried cultural deposits at site 5MF948 is significant.
Excavation of the deposits within the shelter is recommended in order to further
determine their vertical and horizontal nature and extent, to search for additional
environmental and economic indicators, as well as to secure potentially datable organic
materials. Additional high-resolution digital photography of each rock art element is
recommended. Images recorded in RAW format and digitally processed using colorspace
31
