This past couple of years, we are being faced with a business, Loveland Ready Mix,
whose objective is to remove the aggregate from an initial 126.58 acres just east of North
Overland Trail and north of County Road 54G. Their business would also include a cement
batch plant and a concrete crushing facility. From the research that has been completed by No
LaPorte Gravel Corporation, the outcomes for our small community are less than desirable in air
and water quality, in noise levels, in truck traffic, in deterioration of roads, in citizen's safety, in
short and long-term health issues, in well drawdown and ground water flow changes...the list
goes on. My husband and I are very concerned our property value would significantly decrease
much less the quality of life we and others have enjoyed in the past. This proposal is
unacceptable and incompatible with the LaPorte Area Plan. We will not be "the Dung Gate".
We would welcome new businesses in LaPorte who would be contributors, not those
who would rape the land and pad their pockets all in the name of progress, and then leave.
Please take into account, LaPorte will not be the only one who would get the short straw.
Prevailing winds in this area are north-northwest, which promises to impact the Fort Collins area
in many of the same ways LaPorte would be. Also, the rivers flow from the Continental Divide to
the east here on the eastern slope which could carry a negative effect downriver.
May I direct your attention to your website statement of mission and vision...
DRMS--Vision: The division is committed to balance the need for mineral resource
production with protection of the public, environment and Colorado's natural resources.
In the novel "Centennial", authored by James A. Michener, which was later transformed
into a 12-part TV mini-series in 1978-79, the history of Colorado was so poignantly illustrated.
We have the opportunity to look back at history...the choices that were made, the consequences
of those choices, and then to have much wisdom looking forward with visionary eyes into our
future. Let's make choices that posterity, the next stewards of natural resources, will say... we
left them a beautiful heritage!
Yours truly,
Karen L. Lesser
LaPorte Citizen
