Dear Mr. Ebert: Re: Permit#M-2017-036 Site Name: Knox Pit
Living in a rich historical community for nearly half of a century, my family has enjoyed
and respected the innumerable natural resources of the area. Filled with deer, bear, hawks,
Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Red Foxes, Osprey, raccoons and numerous other wildlife, our
home was constructed where they say you used to be able to see the teepee rings of the
indigenous Native Americans who called this their home. There is still a site nearby where
rocks are charred from the furnace of the blacksmith who forged iron in what was called "Camp
Collins", which was later relocated to the present day Fort Collins after the Cache La Poudre
River had flooded in 1864 and destroyed the military camp. Our street name was derived from
one of the early French fur trappers, Antoine Janis. In 1820, the French trappers, caught in a
fierce snow storm, were forced to bury part of their gun powder along the banks of the river to
later return and retrieve it. Thus, the river's name--Cache ' a la Poudre, which in their language
translated "cache of Powder".
Yes, things have changed, you say, and are continuing to change. Fortunately, some
visionaries in 1996 designated the Cache la Poudre River Corridor as a National Heritage Area,
the only one in Colorado. And before, in 1986, as the National Wild and Scenic River Systems,
so that our children and their children's children could enjoy the beauty of Colorado's pristine,
and fleeting natural resources.
We are"the Gate"to these consecrated treasures. More than 3,000 people call this
small community home. It is where we live and work--raise a family--grow a garden--attend
school--worship in our churches--recreate and contribute to a neighborhood. Our businesses
include, a grocer, a gas station, a post office, a fire station, a pub, a water district office, a
wedding venue, a veterinarian, a laundromat, a doctor, a number of restaurants serving Asian
food, coffee, pastries, and famous cinnamon rolls, an auto shop--a real estate business--a
garden greenhouse--and many entrepreneurs and artists.
We are La Porte..."the Gate" in French.
