difficult issue. A Noxious Weed Management Plan will define what measures will be taken to address
different weed species. Several weeds on the State of Colorado noxious weed lists currently occur on the
Orr Pit, Russian knapweed, tamarisk, Russian olive, and Canada thistle. Other weeds that commonly
occur in Pueblo County and require management are cheat grass, kochia, Russian thistle and bind weed.
Land Contour
While conducting reclamation work all slopes should be minimized and mimic the natural topography.
This will reduce erosion, promote favorable conditions for seed germination and limit unnatural barriers
to wildlife. To the greatest extent possible the slopes of the reclaimed property should match its original
condition.
Seed Mix
Proper reclamation, from a wildlife perspective, involves not only stabilizing the soil and establishing
ground cover, but fostering plant communities with a diversity of species and plant types(grasses,
broadleaf fortis, and woody vegetation)which will fully serve the nutritional and cover needs of wildlife.
All reclamation seed mites should be suited to on-site soil types, and mirror native plant communities.
All reseeding should be completed in a timely manner and should be monitored for success and noxious
weed establishment. Below is a short list of grasses, shrubs and fortis that the CPW would recommend
including in the finalized seed mix.
Plants for areas within 100 feet of water:
Yellow indiangrass (Sarghusirum nutans)
Big bluestem (Andrupagan gerarchii
Switcligrass (Panicum virgatum)
Little bluestem (Schiaachyriton scoparh nr)
Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea)
Redtop (Agrastis alba)
Barnyard grass (Echinachloa crusgalli)
Orchardgrass (Dactylis glamerata)
Wheatgrasses- native (Agropyron spp.)
Alfalfa(Medtgaco saliva)
Sweet clover(Melilotus officinalis)
Shrub willows(i.e. coyote) (Salix spp)
Peach lea fwillow (Salix arnygclaloide.$)
Plains cottonwood (Populus delta ides)
Alder (Alms spp.)
Grasses for other upland areas:
Blue grarna (Bouteloua gracilis)
Sideoats grama (Bautelous curtipendula)
Ring mutely (Muhlenbergia torreyi)
Sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus)
Indian ricegrass (Achantherurn hymenoides)
