To: Jared Ebert
Date: December 29, 2017
Page 22
Comment 44
The Division received an objection from the No Laporte Gravel Corp. One of the issues
raised in the objection was a concern vegetation grown in the bottom of the pit
excavation would have greater exposure to possible toxin such as Selenium (Se)from the
Pierre Shale pit bottoms which could provide a risk to both wild and domestic animals.
Please provide a response to this concern.
Response 44
The pit bottoms will be covered with over three feet of cover material at closure.
Because the Pierre Shale has a low hydraulic conductivity and is relatively dry, the only
mechanism for moving constituents upward into the cover material will be by molecular
diffusion, which is a slow process in and of itself. When occurring in relatively dry
materials, molecular diffusion is even slower. Regardless, LRM commits to sampling
vegetation after closure to evaluate if plant uptake is an issue.
RULE 6.4.9 EXHIBIT I - SOILS INFORMATION
Comment 45
Please provide the thickness of the soil for each unit shown on Table 4.
Response 45
The representative profile thickness for Soil Series is listed below:
Soil Map Unit 22 (Caruso Series)
Al - 0 to 11 inches
C 1 - 11 to 17 inches
C2 - 17 to 25 inches
C3 - 25 to 35 inches
C4 - 35 to 44 inches
II C5 - 44 to 60 inches
Soil Map Unit 64 (Loveland Series)
Al —0 to 8 inches
Al2g— 8 to 15 inches
C 1 g— 15 to 32 inches
1IC2g—32 to 60 inches
Soil Map Unit 76 (Nunn Series)
A 1 —0 to 6 inches
Response to DBMS comments T E L E S T O
