The fourth mapped unit, MS, are those areas that were disturbed during other periods of mining
that have potential for either fill material or a source of suitable plant growth material. Generally,
this mapping unit resulted from the leveling of hill tops or ridges by bulldozers to allow for easy
maneuvering or working of mining equipment. When these earlier disturbed soils were moved,
parent material was exposed and in some instances the column was side-cast providing a suitable
and highly localized plant-growth medium source. These areas will be salvaged but are not used
in calculating topsoil needs for the entire site's reclamation plan. Soil and vegetation types are
shown on Map C-1, mapped unit descriptions are detailed below.
Map Unit OF
A typical profile for this unit occurs in open areas where the dominant vegetation is Arizona
fescue. In some areas encroachment of pine is occurring. Where protected and with adequate
moisture retention, sagebrush occurs. Slopes in this unit generally range from 0 to 5 percent
(UFA phrase), though in some areas the slope may range from 5-15% (UFB phrase). Soils
within this mapping unit area are well drained with moderate permeability. Erosion hazard due
to wind and water is moderate.
Map Unit FA
Soils of this unit occur under the forest canopy. The dominant tree species is lodgepole pine
with aspen and very small amounts of spruce interspersed. Two phases of the FA map unit occur
within the area: FAA, on slopes of 0 to 5 percent, and FAB, on the 5 to 15 percent slopes. Soils
within this map unit are well draining with moderate to rapid permeability and may or may not
have gravelly or cobbly profiles above the C horizon. Soils within this map unit have moderate
erosion hazards.
Map Unit GO
Soils of this unit occur on north/south trending lateral moraines of past glaciations. They are
generally very gravelly with cobbles occurring below 12 inches depth. The textures below 24
inches are usually cobbly loam or cobbly sandy loams. These textures generally prevail to
Alma Placer Mine (.re$IA wki and Awxialrs,PI I
December 2017 1-3
