3) Fertilizer should be applied immediately prior to seeding <br /> or at the time of seeding. A soil test should be performed to <br /> determine the proper fertilizer requirement. In lieu of a <br /> soil test , fertilize with 40 pounds per acre each of available <br /> elemental nitrogen (N) and phosphoric acid (P205) . The <br /> fertilizer should be incorporated into the top 2 or 3 inches <br /> of soil using a disk or harrow implement. (See Item 6 for <br /> using manure as fertilizer . ) <br /> 4) Soils that become overcompacted by traffic or equipment <br /> should be tilled to break-up root restricting layers , harrowed <br /> and then rolled or packed to prepare the required firm <br /> seedbed . The seedbed should be well -settled and firm, so that <br /> seed can be placed at the recommended seeding depth . The <br /> ideal firmness is when a one-half inch boot print remains <br /> after walking across the soil surface . <br /> 5) Seeding should be done using a grass drill . The drill <br /> should be equipped with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, <br /> agitator , furrow openers and packer wheels or drag chains . <br /> The distance between drill rows should not exceed 12 inches. <br /> The seed can be broadcasted in areas which are inaccessible to <br /> a grass drill . If the seed is broadcasted , then the seeding <br /> rate should be doubled . Broadcasted seed should be uniformly <br /> distributed over the ground surface and mixed into the soil <br /> with a harrow or by hand raking . The seed can be planted <br /> anytime between November 1 and April 30. Seeding should not <br /> be done when soils are frozen . The seeds should be planted <br /> approximately 1/2 to 1 inch deep _ <br /> The following grass seed mix is adapted to the site and will <br /> provide adequate ground cover protection . While these species <br /> are not native to the site , another clay mine in this area has <br /> been successfully seeded with these species . And, introduced, <br /> cool -season grass pastures are commonly found in this area. <br /> SPECIES VARIETY %MIX LSS.
