USDA Soil Conservation Service
823 Desert Flower Blvd .
Pueblo, CO 81001
!November 6, 1990
This is in reference to an on-site investigation done November
2, 1990 on a clay mine expansion located in the SW1/4 of the
SE1/4 of Section 30 T22S R67W near Beulah , CO. The following
information may be used to revegetate the site .
The site is not prime farmland. The present use is rangeland .
The owner of the land is J. P. Hanratty . General Refractories
Co. will do the mining and will be responsible for the
reclamation.
Soils information is attached.
The present plant community is dominated by blue grama and a
lesser amount of western wheatgrass. Red threeawn, sand
dropseed , ring muhly , tumblegrass, and japanese brome occur in
trace amounts. Shrubs found on the site are broom snakeweed,
fringed sagebrush , and Gambol oak . A variety of forbs are
found on the site including hairy goldaster, alfileria, plains
pricklypear, aster and buckwheat species . Oneseed juniper and
ponderosa pine also occur on the site. See the attached
inventory for a listing of the vegetation amounts. Present
ground cover is estimated at 25% and total annual production
is estimated at 600-800 pounds per acre air-dry .
The Soil Conservation Service recommends the following steps
to revegetate the site:
1) At least 6 inches of the top layer of soil should be
removed and stockpiled.
2) After mining is complete and prior to spreading the
topsoil , the area should be bank sloped so that no slope is
steeper than a 3: 1 slope. Rough areas should be smoothed to
permit easier seeding and mulching. The area should be
scarified to a depth of 6 inches to permit better bonding
between the topsoil and the underlying soil material . After
scarification, the topsoil should be uniformly spread over the
area.
