Bill Bear
Page 2
11/8/2017
the written narrative in the report detailing whether or not mining related impacts
have occurred.
Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) are submitted to the Division on a monthly basis. There
were no exceedances recorded ant any of the monitoring locations during the 2016 calendar year.
For more detailed reviews of the DMRs for the Bowie No. 2 Mine, please see the Division's
quarterly DMR review letters.
On August 18, 2015 the Division approved TR -103 which allowed the suspension of 23
monitoring points that would not be impacted until mining activities in 2018, and 15 monitoring
points that were no longer considered necessary due to the installation of replacement monitoring
points or the data was considered no longer relevant to the Bowie No. 2 Mine. Data for these
sites was not collected in 2016 due to no mining activity occurring in the areas of the monitoring
points.
Noted in the 2016 AHR, a new field technician and laboratory were used to collect and analyze
the samples collected in 2016. Data exceeding baseline parameters was thought to have been a
function of the new field technician and/or the new laboratory. Data collected in 2017 will be
compared to the 2016 data to see if any trends continue to exist or if the data will return to
similar values to the existing data.
2. During the review of the 2016 AHR it was observed that several monitoring
locations had recorded flows with no corresponding laboratory data. Please explain
in detail the reasoning for laboratory data not being conducted or included in the
2016 AHR.
3. It was also observed that the monitoring point EF -1 was missing from the report.
Please provide the Division with the data for EF -1 or provide an explanation of why
data was not collected at the monitoring point in 2016.
4. Monitoring well DH -67B was reported to have a broken bailer, has the bailer for
this well been repaired?
The Division has no further comments. This concludes the review of the 2016 Annual
Hydrology Report for the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
