A foundation check sheet shall be signed
by the Contractor and Engineer before soil placement.
All cavities, depressions and irregularities, within the area to be covered by embankment and which extend
below or beyond the established lines of excavation for dam embankment foundations, shall be filled with
embankment materials as specified for the overlying embankment.
3.02 STRIPPING
The entire area to be occupied by the embankment shall be stripped to the depth shown on the Construction
Drawings or to a sufficient depth,as determined by the Engineer,to remove all unsuitable materials. The
unsuitable materials to be removed by stripping shall include all debris, topsoil, vegetable matter, including
roots and all other perishable and objectionable materials that are unsuitable for use in permanent construction
required under these Specifications or that might interfere with the proper bonding of the embankment with the
foundation or the proper compaction of the materials in the embankment,or that may be otherwise
objectionable as determined by the Engineer. If suitable, stripped material shall be stockpiled for future use as
topsoil.
3.03 FOUNDATION PREPARATION
The foundation shall be tested with density gauge and/or proofrolled as approved by the Engineer prior to
placement of any soils. Prior to placement of the embankment, the entire foundation shall be stripped to a
depth of 12",as shown on the Plans, and properly prepared. Locally, stripping may have to be deeper to reach
a suitable subgrade. All loose materials shall be removed. The foundation shall be moisture conditioned and
rolled with a sheepsfoot compactor prior to placement of the first lift of embankment soil.
Section 02290-Page 2 of 4 February 2016
