DIVISION 2 - SITE WORK
SECTION 02290-EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION
PART1-GENERAL
1.01 WORK INCLUDED
Construction of the embankment as shown on the Construction Drawings and as specified herein, including
foundation preparation,dewatering,fill placement,moisture control,and compaction.
1.02 RELATED WORK
A. Section 02100-Site Preparation
B. Section 02140-Dewatering
PART 2-MATERIALS
2.01 COMPACTED EMBANKMENT
The embankment fill shall be constructed in accordance with the Construction Drawings. The majority of the
embankments will be constructed with native soils. All embankment construction shall be in accordance with
these Specifications.
A. Embankment Fill
Embankment Fill will be constructed of clayey soils meeting the following criteria:
Sieve Size %Passing
8" 100
No.4 30-85
No.200 15-60
Minimum Plasticity Index of 8
The material shall be obtained from required excavations, borrow areas, stockpiles,or other sources as
determined by the Contractor and approved by the Engineer. The soils shall be free of any deleterious
materials, including materials larger than 8". It is anticipated that all borrow materials will be from
the existing stockpiles and/or from the bottom of the existing mined cell. Clayey overburden soils
do not require the use of a disc. If blending of dissimilar materials are used for embankment fill, such
as clayey overburden soils and squeegee,a disc will be required on the fill as part of the soil
placement procedures.
B. Pit Run Fill
Pit Run Fill will be constructed using free draining(i.e.less than 5%passing the No.200 sieve)native
pit run soils excavated from the mine slopes as determined by the Contractor and approved by the
Engineer. Moisture condition and compact pit run fill as necessary to construct a slope similar to the
existing cut slopes at the mine.
February 2016 Section 02290-Page 1 of 4
