Application for Succession of Operators October 2017
AEG Project Descriptions
Schwartzwalder Mine—Cotter Corporation—Golden, CO
The Schwartzwalder mine is a former underground uranium mine near Golden, Colorado owned
by Cotter Corp. In 2013 Cotter was ordered to dewater the mine to prevent seepage into a local
stream that feeds into the Denver water supply. AEG's scope of work was focused on the
construction of an active water treatment plant to reduce contaminant concentration sufficiently to
allow for discharge to the environment. More specifically, it included:
• Design, construction and commissioning of a combined reverse osmosis (RO)/insitu
biochemical treatment system capable of processing 200 gpm;
• Operations achieved metal concentration reduction goals of >90% in Uranium and
Selenium and>50% in Molybdenum within 6 months, allowing for passive outflow from
the mine workings into the environment.
Ambrosia Lake—BHP Billiton Closed Sites—Grants NM
AEG provided site management and support services for the care and maintenance of the former
uranium mill site and the nine associated underground mines. The services were performed in
support of the completion of all remaining surface reclamation project as the site prepared for
transition to the DOE. More specficially,this included:
• The Deputy Site Manager assigned to the site acted on behalf of BHP Billiton to ensure the
site maintained environmental compliance;
• Managed teams of subcontractors who performed the groundwater monitoring and
compliance reporting, radiation scanning and soil sampling, risk management and he
preparation of annual budgets in support of the required Financial Assurance;
• Participated in regulatory meetings in support of the NRC-issued RML;
Keno Hill Silver District—Indigenous Northern Affairs of Canada—Yukon Territory, Canada
In 2006 the abandoned Keno Hill site was put up for sale by the Federal Government of Canada.
AEG's parent company, Alexco Resource Corp. (Alexco), was the successful purchaser of
property, in large part due to the environmental management and projects completed by AEG. The
scope of work performed by AEG is multifaceted and is guided by a unique contractual
arrangement between AEG's parent company Alexco and the Government of Canada. It is
anticipated the closure plan will begin implementation in 2019 with an expected cost of$100M
for capital costs and 30-year O&M period. AEG's scope of work includes:
• Care and maintenance of the district and operations of 4 water treatment facilities for the
Government of Canada,treating primarily Zn and Cd;
• Operation of a water treatment plant for the Bellekeno mine owned by Alexco Resource
Corp.;
s
