Preliminary Report for Data Recovery at Sites MK -1-082317 and MK -2-082317 Colowyo Coal Company
Figure 6. Site MK -1-082317, Feature 1, Full Excavation, facing southwest.
3.1.3.2 Feature 2
Feature 2 is an amorphous soil stain with charcoal flecking and HAIR measuring approximately
66 cm north to south by 44 cm east to west (Figures 7 and 8). Actual top of the feature is unknown,
but it appears to have been approximately 20 cm below ground surface. The stain is likely the
remains of a thermal feature; however it has been significantly impacted. A collapsed rodent
burrow cuts into the north central part of the stain distorting the overall shape. The size and
location of the feature within the site grid system necessitated one 1 by 1 m unit being established
to investigate it.
The feature's depth is 12.4 cm below the 205N 200E unit datum. Overall feature shape has been
compromised by rodent impacts; however, based on the remaining portions it appears to have be
a circular basin. Additional disturbances to the feature include moderate root action also distorting
the overall shape. Feature fill consisted of dark stained sediment (10YR2/1, Black); varying dense
charcoal flecking and moderately dense HAR. Twenty-one pieces of HAIR were recovered. Most
of the HAIR is in the 5 to 3 cm diameter size class (11 pieces (0.25 kg)) and the 10 to 5 cm diameter
size class (7 pieces (1.75 kg)). HAIR also occurs in the 3 to 1 diameter size class (2 pieces (0.02
kg)) and the 10 cm diameter size class (1 piece (0.5 kg)).
Tetra Tech September 29, 2017
