archaeologist maintained transect spacing and orientation with a Trimble GPS unit. All
encountered cultural resources were documented and evaluated for inclusion on the NRHP.
VIII
30.
RESULTS
List IFs if applicable. Indicate IF locations on the map completed for Part III.
A. Smithsonian Number: Description:
B. Smithsonian Number: Description:
C. Smithsonian Number: Description:
D. Smithsonian Number: Description:
31. Using your professional knowledge of the region, why are there none or very limited
cultural remains in the project area? Is there subsurface potential?
The inventory was located on a broad flat ridge upland of residual sediments that offers
little potential for the long term preservation of cultural deposits, either surface or
subsurface. The area is well away from perennial water sources and vegetation does
not consist of species known to be intensively exploited by prehistoric groups. Use of
the project area, if any, would have been ephemeral and unlikely to leave significant
material signatures.
No historic properties were identified within the project area and Tetra Tech
recommends a finding of No Historic Properties Affected for the Project. In the event
that subsurface artifacts or human remains are discovered during the project
construction, all work within a 100 -meter buffer (50 meters either side) of the discovery
shall cease until an archaeologist can record the site and make a determination of the
significance of the resource. Once the site has been recorded, and if the site is
assessed as "not eligible" for inclusion into the NRHP, work on that area may resume
pending the Colorado SHPO concurrence of the assessment. If the site is assessed as
"eligible" for inclusion into the NRHP, a mitigation plan will be proposed and sent to the
Colorado SHPO for review. All work in the area of the resource shall remain halted until
the mitigation process is complete and state and county guidelines are met.
