surrounding elevation (El. 6500). Al has continued to stockpile material stripped from
mining activities within the Central Quarry in addition to jade air fines created during
aggregate production in stockpiles above El. 6500. Al plans to utilize this material in future
reclamation slopes within the South Quarry.
Al is actively mining the South Quarry and hauling excavated material to the processing
facility near the North Quarry for sale as commercial aggregate. During various visits to the
site for this TR and for 2013-2016 Annual Reporting, GEI observed that mining activities in
the South Quarry have occurred primarily on the western (east facing) mountain slopes.
Three below-grade benches have been excavated down to about El. 6600 on the eastern side
of the quarry. Al has begun reclamation on some areas within the South Quarry, primarily at
the high elevation benches (El. 7450 up to El. 7550) on the west side of the quarry. Mine
haul roads are frequently modified within the South Quarry to accommodate the changing
highwall configuration.
1.2 Scope of Work
GEI performed a field survey of the South Quarry using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
flights to capture geo-oriented photography of the existing conditions. Geo-oriented
photographs were used to generate a photogrammetric model and to generate contours of the
existing topographic conditions within the South Quarry. All UAS flights were performed in
accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations by licensed remote
pilots. A spotter was used during UAS operations to maintain a visual line-of-sight with the
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV). Multiple flights were necessary to obtain the required
photographs to generate topographic contours.
Control points were established at the time of the aerial survey to rectify the
photogrammetric model and to provide a reference benchmarks to assist with the
photogrammetry. Control points are discernable landmarks or visible marks on the ground
made with marking paint.
After the site visit, GEI uploaded photos of the South Quarry into Pix4D software for
generation of the photogrammetric model. Pix4D uses matching keypoints in overlapping
photographs to tie the information together and develop a three-dimensional (313) mosaic of
the site photographs. The 3D model is used to generate elevation contours from the
photogrammetric model, which are exported for use in AutoCAD C1v113D. Elevation
contours will be used to develop a surface within Civil3D and will be used to create
representative site topography for use in stability analyses, highwall design
recommendations, and reserve estimations.
At various times during the project, the GEI project manager and/or a GE1 staff engineer or
geologist traveled to the site to observe conditions within the South Quarry and to monitor
drilling activities.
Aggregate Industries Morrison Quarry GEI Consultants, Inc.
South Quarry Highwall Design Technical Revision 2 August 2017
