Historic Properties Treatneeni Plan, Collotn Mine, Colorado 26
4.0 SCOPE OF WORK
This section of the report details the Phase I and II scope of work for each site. Table 4.1
summarizes the amount of excavation proposed at each site. The purpose of the Phase I tests
will be to efficiently investigate significant buried cultural deposits that will then be mitigated
through Phase II data recovery. The augers will be used to define the areas of the sites that will
require 1 x 1-m test units, which will then lead to data recovery block excavations. The test
excavations will use standard archaeological field procedures. Phase I excavations at the four
sites will include 80 auger tests, 20 1 x 1-m test units, and three backhoe trenches. The
subsurface tests will be placed in areas of each site judged to have the greatest potential to
contain buried cultural remains and will be plotted on site maps that were prepared during
previous Class III inventories. Although specific numbers of auger tests and test units are
proposed for each site, the scope of work will be flexible to allow the project archaeologist to
re -allocate auger tests and test units as needed at individual sites. For instance, if 20 auger tests
and two test units are proposed for a site but initial testing of only 10 auger tests and one test
unit determines that the site does not contain significant cultural deposits, the remaining
10 auger tests and one test unit may be allocated to the other sites.
4.1 SITE 5MF969
4.1.1 Phase I Excavation
Seven 1 x 1-m test units and 20 auger tests are recommended for the site. The units will be
placed next to the arroyo cutbank walls where bone and other cultural material have eroded out.
In areas where deposits appear either to be deeper than 1 m or to be horizontally extensive, test
units may be grouped to allow full exposure and evaluation of buried deposits. The auger tests
will be used to investigate other areas of the site that may contain subsurface cultural materials.
The test excavations will follow the methods detailed in Section 5.1 below.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
