drainage channel as well as a very narrow adjacent drainageway bottomland that may
include possible wetlands in a few very small areas. It also includes two very narrow,
equally incised, ephemeral drainageway tributaries that extend northeast up the canyon
that contains the main portal for the McClane Canyon Mine. Typical soils for East Salt
Creek include undifferentiated Ustic Torrifluvents, which are mainly well drained, variable -
textured drainage soils with evident stratification. Because East Salt Creek is not projected
to be disturbed by project activities, neither a soil suitability evaluation nor a proposed
salvage depth recommendation was developed.
3.5 Map Unit DL: Disturbed Land
Map Unit DL (Disturbed Land) is delineated on a few existing disturbed areas associated
with the current mining, as well as on the current access/haul road corridor. One of the
delineations includes an existing Topsoil Storage Pile but this soil is intended for use in
future reclamation of existing mining disturbances. There is no additional soil available for
salvage from Map Unit DL (Disturbed Land).
3.6 Soil Substratum Composite Samples MC21C and MC22C
Two representative sites, MC21 in Map Unit H, and MC22 in Map Unit I, were selected for
composite sampling of the 2 foot to 8 foot depth interval (24 to 96 inches). These two
composite samples, MC21C and MC22C, were analyzed at IML for standard overburden
parameters although the material was clearly soil and not weathered bedrock overburden.
Laboratory results are attached to this report. Results indicate that all parameters are
"suitable" (WDEQ, 1996) for both samples except SAR (23.4) of MC22C. This exceeds the
suitability threshold of SAR 15 but is similar to high SAR values for lower soil substratum
samples of MC22 (SAR=26.9 for 40-60", and SAR=28.1 for 60-96"), and MC24 (SAR=29.0
for 40-60", and SAR=34.7 for 60-96"). This lower soil substratum material was not
recommended for soil salvage. A single unsuitable parameter is not sufficient to consider
all of composite sample MC22C unsuitable. The sample is dominantly suitable and an
SAR of 23.4 is not a major limiting problem. In Wyoming DEQ District 2 (SW Wyoming),
soil and overburden material with SAR up to 30 in certain cases is considered suitable for
salvage and use in reclamation (Moxley, 2008).
-14-
