See Figure 4.1.1, Premining and
Postmining Land Use.
(b) (i) The variety of uses in the area to be affected by the surface
facilities before any mining is very limited. The area's only use has
been rangeland and wildlife habitat.
(ii) The productivity of the land to be affected by the surface facilities is
limited to rangeland and fish and wildlife habitat as explained above
and is detailed in Section 2.04.10.
(a) The proposed permit area has been previously mined. In the early
years coal was mined with the pick -and -shovel method. In later years
coal was shot on the solid and loaded by shovel or with a mechanized
loading machine. Over the years coal hauling transitioned from wagon
teams to gas powered vehicles.
(b) The Monger Canyon Mine produced coal from the Palisade seam.
(c) The Monger Canyon Mine produced 5,325 tons of coal.
(d) The Monger Canyon Mine operated sporadically between 1933 and
1947.
(e) The Monger Canyon Mine is shown on the Figure 2.1-1 Mine Plan and
Sequence Map.
Lands within Garfield County that are located in the project area are zoned
Open Space (OS) and Resource Lands (RL).
PR -02 2.04-2 10/12
