2.04.3 General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use Information
(1) The permit and adjacent area lie within western Garfield County, Colorado.
Public lands within the permit and adjacent area are administered by the U.S.
Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Private lands are under the jurisdictions
of Garfield County. All BLM land within the project area is managed by the
Grand Junction Field Office. Livestock grazing is a primary use on public
lands; much of the public lands within the project area are divided into grazing
allotments.
Existing land uses within the permit and adjacent area consist of mineral
exploration and production facilities, gas development and extraction,
livestock grazing, transportation and utility corridors, dispersed and developed
recreation.
Grazing allotments overlie the permit and adjacent area. The grazing
allotments are shown on Figure 1.1-31D.
Range improvements present on the allotments include fences along the
allotment boundaries, internal pasture fences and stock ponds. The
distribution and volume of water available for livestock use is a challenge for
livestock management.
Dispersed recreational uses occur throughout the public lands administered
by the BLM. Recreational opportunities within the permit and adjacent area
include off-highway vehicle use, vehicle driving for pleasure, mountain biking,
horseback riding, camping, hiking, hunting, shooting, and viewing scenery
and natural features.
The rugged mountainous terrain in the permit and adjacent area is
predominantly covered with pinyon -juniper and oak brush. A few small
undeveloped pastures and meadows are also present in the high country.
The BLM has cleared (chained) a few areas to improve the range and wildlife
habitat. The slopes are too steep to offer any agricultural potential and offer
only minimal grazing potential.
PR -02 2.04-1 10/12
