2.04.9 Soils Resource Information
RIVRA VARIANT
The Rivra Variant consists of deep, moderately textured, well -drained soils.
These soils formed in mixed alluvium. Elevation range is 5,200 to 5,600 feet. Annual
precipitation is about 10 inches. The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 400 to
470 F, and the frost -free period is 90 to 135 days. The native vegetation is a
g reasewood-sh ru bland community.
The Rivra Variant is a member of the loamy -skeletal, mixed, frigid family of Ustic
Torrifluvents. A representative profile of Rivra gravel sandy loam variant, sample point
MC4, about 995 feet east and 2,385 feet north of the southwest corner of Section 21, T
7 S, R 102 W at an elevation of 5,446 feet is:
Al 0 to 5 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (10 YR
4/3) moist; medium fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly
sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; 15 percent gravels; many fine and very
fine roots, common medium roots; pH 8.0; diffuse boundary.
AC 5 to 12 inches; light yellowish brown (10 YR 6/4) sandy loam, yellowish brown
(10 YR 5/4) moist; weak thin platy parting to fine granular structure; soft, very
friable, non -sticky and non -plastic; calcareous; pH 7.8; abrupt wavy boundary.
C1 12 to 29 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) loamy sand brown (10 YR 5/3) moist;
weak fine granular parting to fine single grained structure; slightly hard, very
friable, non -sticky and non -plastic; calcareous; 40 percent pea gravels in upper
6 inches, some cobbles below; pH 7.6; clear irregular boundary.
C2 29 to 70 inches; variously colored (10 YR 5/3, 5/4) stratified sands and gravelly
coarse sands, variously colored (10 YR 4/3, 4/4) moist; weak fine granular
parting to fine single grained structure; loose, non -sticky, and non -plastic;
calcareous; 10 to 25 percent pea gravels in irregular layers; coal fragments
mainly below 55 inches; pH 8.2.
The A horizon is gravelly sandy loam, loam or loamy sand. Some profiles have a
very bouldery or stony surface. Coarse fragments increase below 9 inches. Coarse
fragments amount to 60 to 80 percent larger than 2 mm and as much as 20 percent
larger than 3 inches in some profiles. The soil has a hue of 2.5 Y or 10 YR, value of 5
through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and a chroma of 2 or 3. The described pedon is finer than
allowed in sandy -skeletal families; it is therefore mapped as a variant of the Rivra.
PR -02 2.04-38 10/12
