2.04.9 Soils Resource Information <br />material; Gravely substrata occur below 40 inches in some pedons. Pedons adjacent to <br />streams have up to 10 percent gravels at or near the surface. <br />NIHILL SERIES <br />The Nihill series consists of deep, moderate -textures, well to somewhat <br />excessively drained soils. These soils formed in colluvium derived from sandstone. <br />Elevation range is 5,350 to 5,600 feet. Annual precipitation is about 10 inches. The <br />mean annual soil temperature ranges from 470 to 570 F, and the frost free period is 105 <br />to 135 days. The vegetation is a greasewood-shrubland or juniper -woodland <br />community. <br />The Nihill series is a member of the loamy -skeletal, mixed (calcareous), mesic <br />family of Ustic Torriorthents. A representative profile of Nihill loam, sample point MC3, <br />about 1,335 feet east and 2,480 feet south of the northwest corner of Section 21, T 7 S, <br />R 102 W at an elevation of 5,470 feet is: <br />A11 0 to 7 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) moist; moderate <br />thin platy structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; <br />pH 7.3; gradual smooth boundary. <br />Al2 7 to 16 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) very fine sandy loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) <br />moist; moderate thin platy and moderate fine angular blocky structure; slightly <br />hard, friable, slightly sticky and plastic calcareous; 3 to 5 percent gravels; pH <br />7.4; clear smooth boundary. <br />C1 cal to 30 inches; light brownish gray (10 YR 6/2) gravelly very fine sandy clay <br />loam, grayish brown (10 YR 5/2) moist; moderate fine subangular structure; <br />slightly hard, very friable, sticky and plastic; calcareous; 10 to 15 percent <br />gravels, 15 percent cobbles, 5 percent stones; lime deposits on surface of <br />coarse fragments; coal fragments; pH 7.6; gradual smooth boundary. <br />C2ca 30 to 37 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) gravelly sandy loam, yellowish brown <br />(10 YR 5/4) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft very friable, non -sticky <br />and non -plastic; strongly calcareous; 25 percent gravels, 10 percent cobbles; <br />pockets of loamy and sand material; pH 7.6; gradual smooth boundary. <br />C3 37 to 71+ inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) clay loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) moist; <br />massive structure; soft, friable, sticky and plastic; calcareous; pH 7.8. <br />The A horizon has a hue of 2.5 Y or 10 YR, value of 5 or 6, and a chroma of 2 or <br />3. The C horizon has a hue of 2.5 Y or 10 YR, value of 6 or 7, and a chroma of 2 <br />through 4. It is very gravelly sandy loam to very gravelly light clay loam.
