Please call if there any questions at 303-229-9692. Also, can you please
clarify what the current status is for 1041 regulations with regard to gold placer and gravel
operations within the County?
Statement of No Impact for Wildlife
First, although the permit maximum disturbed area is 35.47 acres, only 6.03 acres will require
reclamation at any one time since the operation will reclaim areas behind the pits as they
advance. Also, some roads will remain after reclamation for use by the landowner. This
significantly helps in reducing impacts to wildlife.
Second, the soils on the site are very poor and are very rocky. They support little grass cover for
feed for deer and elk and few of the animals have been seen in the wooded areas around the pit.
Also, the pine needles from the trees restrict grass growth, which the deer and elk want to feed
on.
Third, the site has a substantial amount of pre -law disturbance from old hydraulic mining and
sluice operations from the 1800's, where no topsoil was ever salvaged and these areas have never
naturally reclaimed. The large boulders present are very detrimental to big game wildlife since
they are afraid to walk in these areas. The reclamation plan for the site will actually help to
reclaim these areas by removing the large rocks, regrading the Iand surface, providing a
substitute topsoil, followed by seeding, and mulching. In this way, the operation will actually
improve the site for wildlife as final reclamation is complete.
Fourth, the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife has reviewed all the operations in the valley
between Alma and Fairplay and has not had objections to any of the permits. All of these other
