Actions taken to respond to and correct the emergency situation or condition
• Spill was observed by a mill operator preforming a daily walk around inspection.
• The lime slurry pumps were immediately shut off and the valves feeding the pumps from the
lime silo were closed. Based on the rapid change in the lime silo tank levels, it appears that
the spill occurred for less than 20 mins.
• Two front end loaders and a skidsteer, and were used to recovered the lime slurry and the
contaminated soil. The soil was removed using an `over-excavation' approach. Depth of
recovery was approximately six to twelve inches. Areas where the lime could not be
excavated, were neutralized using freshwater.
• Approximately 24 cubic yards of lime slurry and soil were transported by the front end
loaders to the tailings stockpile, located near the load out bin (LOB). The lime slurry and soil
were mixed into the tailings. The front end loaders and skidsteer were decontaminated and
returned to normal activities.
• The over-excavated areas were filled in with clean fill and gravel.
