2.1.8 Vacuum Pumps
Two vacuum pumps are provided, in order that one may be operated while the other is
either being serviced or repaired. The piping of both pumps is to a common header. Each
pump can be isolated mechanically by closing the appropriate ball valve at the inlet and
outlet of the pump.
The selection of one pump or the other is done with the rotary switch located in the panel
near the pumps.
ANOTICE
The vacuum pump rotary switch located in the vacuum pump junction box
is not a motor isolation switch, and cannot be used for servicing.
Figure 2.11 - Vacuum Pumps
The vacuum pumpsare dry carbon vane pumps. The seal between the body of the pump
and the blades is through the spring loaded blades which are angled to make contact with
the body.
CAUTION
Rotating the pump in the wrong direction will cause damage to the pump
blades, requiring removal and replacement of the vanes. When in doubt
about the correct rotation, disconnect the flexible coupling between the
motor and the pump, before applying power to the pump.
22
