2.1.5 Aftercooler
The aftercooler is located above the collector vessel. Any vapours which have not
condensed in the collector vessel will be carried into the aftercooler. The aftercooler is a
double jacketed condenser with continuous water circulation between the jackets.
Condensate formed in the aftercooler will drop back down into the collector vessel.
Figure 2.8 — Typical Aftercooler
A relief valve located in the water supply line ensures that the vessel is not over
pressurized.
A mist eliminatoris located inside the aftercooler. The mist eliminator collects small
droplets of vapour and agglomerates these droplets to the point where they are sufficiently
large enough to drop down into the collector.
The mist eliminator often collects sludge, and must be back flushed at least once at the
end of each batch operation. This is done through the aftercooler spray nozzle, by
activating the button on the local HMI. Experience will dictate the frequency and duration
of the flushing process.
ANOTICE
Flushing can only be accomplished when the vacuum pump has been turned off,
so as to prevent water from being drawn into the carbon columns and vacuum
pump.
19
