2.1.4 Collector Vessel
The collector vessel is used to collect any water and mercury produced in the retorting
process and condensed by the condenser tubes. Since the water is removed first in the
distillation process, it will be available in the collector to provide a blanket shield over the
mercury as the mercury collects on the bottom.
Figure 2.7 — Collector Vessel
If it is anticipated that material will be processed which contains insufficient water to
provide this blanket shield, it is recommended that some water be added to the collector
through the aftercoolerspray nozzle, by activating the button on the local HMI. The time
the spray nozzle is activated is factory set for 15 seconds (N4 gallons).
An inspection port is provided at the top of the collector vessel in the form of a 4" blind
flange. This flange may be removed and visual inspection may be carried out through the
top of the vessel.
A drain, operated manually with a 1 1/2" ball valve, is located at the lowest point on the
front face of the collector vessel, which is used to drain the mercury, water and sludge, to
completely empty the collector vessel. This operation must be carried out with the vacuum
pump off and no vacuum in the system.
W.
