2.1 DESCRIPTION OF MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT
Refer to the General Arrangement and Process Flow and Instrumentation drawings
supplied with this manual.
2.1.1 Retort
The retort is a cylindrical vessel with a loading door at the front and a vapour outlet at the
back. Shelves attached to the sides of the vessel support the "boats" or trays, in which the
product being retorted is loaded.
Figure 2.1—Retort vessel with boats inside
The door swings freely on a davit type hinge, with ball bearing hinge points to allow
effortless movement of the door.
The boats are loaded stacked up to two high into the retort using a boat transporter, which
rolls on rails secured to the bottom of the vessel. The transporter, which includes a
mechanical scissor jack, is moved into and out of the retort manually, using a pump
handle. The boats are raised and lowered using the jack.
Once the retort is loaded, and the transporter is removed, the door is closed and a vacuum
may be drawn on the retort while heat is applied, to vaporize the mercury.
14
