SOP#NMS-ANA-SOP-SWDC REV#1.1 Title:Solid Wst.Disposal Characterization Effective Date 10/11/2012
10.1.4. Repeat steps (sec. 10.1.1-10.1.3) if necessary to obtain constant weight.
10.1.5. Calculate the solid weight fraction (S) as shown in section (sec. 11.1)
10.2. Determination of extraction fluid:
10.2.1. Weigh about 5g of sample into a 400ml beaker. Particle size should be 1 mm
or less in diameter.
10.2.2. Add 96.5ml of DI H2O to the beaker and cover with a watch glass. Stir for a
duration of 5 min with a magnetic stirrer.
10.2.3. Measure the pH of the sample and record. If pH is <5 then use extraction
fluid #1, if pH is >5 proceed to step 10.2.4.
10.2.4. Add 3.5ml of 1 N HCI to sample, slurry briefly and heat at -500C for 10min
on a hotplate.
10.2.5. Let solution cool. Measure and record the pH. If pH is <5 then use extraction
fluid #1, if the pH is >5 use extraction fluid #2.
10.3. Add 10.0 +/- 0.1 g of sample on a dry weight basis to extraction vessel (250ml
polypropylene bottle). Calculate the amount of as-received sample (sec. 11.2)
equivalent to 10g of dry sample.
10.4. Add the determined extraction fluid at a 1:20 ratio of dry sample-to-liquid ratio.
(1g=1ml at room temp)
10.5. Securely fasten extraction vessel in bottle roller.
10.6. Place roller on bottle rolls and rotate end-over-end at 30 rpm for 18.00+0.25
hours. Record the duration of the leach from Start to end.
10.7. Set bottles aside and allow the solids to settle.
10.8. Set up a filtration device with enough capacity to filter 200ml. Use 0.7 prn TCLP
borosilicate filter.
10.9. Filter at least 100ml of leachate.
10.10. Measure and record the pH immediately.
10.11. Collect about 125 ml of leachate in a poly bottle. Submit for ICP-26-DIG and Hg-
COMB-L analysis.
10.12.
