SOIL LOSS COMPARISON - ROADSIDE NORTH PORTAL
RECLAIMED VERSUS BASELINE (SHADSCALE REFERENCE AREA) CONDITIONS
SUMMARY OF RESULTS
The following pages are a summary of calculations presented to determine if untreated
drainage from reclaimed pond 11, CRDA-1 Road, including the top of the CRDA-1 and
the G Substation areas are contributing suspended solids to the stream flow or runoff
outside the permit area in excess of pre -mining levels.
In accordance with Phase II and Phase III bond release guidelines, erosional stability will
be evaluated during the inspections. Evaluation of the reclaimed areas can be
supported by a demonstration of sediment loss. For these purposes, the Universal Soil
Loss Equation will be used (USLE).
The USLE is used to calculate the soil loss from the reclaimed and adjacent areas to
determine if untreated drainage from the reclaimed areas are contributing suspended
solids in excess of premining levels. The sediment volume calculation is prepared in
accordance with the USDA Technical Notes #50, dated January 1977. The maps and
figures utilized in the USLE are obtained from the referenced Agronomy Note #50.
Using the Universal Soil Loss Equation
A=RKLSCP
A is the soil loss in Tons/Acre/Year
R = Rainfall Factor
K = soil erodibility factor
LS = combined length of slope factor
C = cropping management factor
P = erosion control practice factor
For evaluation purposes, the reclaimed areas were broken into three areas.
1.
