gold, areas will be backfilled with sand and gravel remaining from gold processing as soon as they
are mined out. This will limit the exposed groundwater surface. See Map C-2.
During mining, topsoil will be stripped from undisturbed areas, and used to reclaim the previously
mined out areas. Topsoil from the south half of Phase I and Phase 2 will be used to reclaimed
Phase 1. Remaining Phase 2 topsoil, along with topsoil from Phase 3, will be used to topsoil Phases
2 and 3. Fines from gold washing may be used as substitute topsoil during reclamation.
The Fairplay Au Pit mine site consists of roughly 6 million tons of sand and gravel in untouched
alluvium and glacial debris in phases 2, 3, and the southern half of phase I and in large piles
adjacent to the Middle Fork of the South Platte River left behind by the placer hydraulicking
operations of the late 19`h century. The piles are currently 20-30 feet in height, depending on
location. In general, the sand and gravel produced as part of placer mining will be replaced on site
as backfill prior to topsoi ling. Some sand and gravel is expected to be sold for construction
materials.
Well data from 2008 drilling by the State of Colorado, Office of the State Engineer, shows up to
200 feet of native Pleistocene glacial outwash consisting of cobble, sand, gravel, and clay deposited
above the red shales and sandstones of the Permian Maroon formation.
Blasting will not take place at the Fairplay Au Pit.
2. Mining Timetable
Production at the Fairplay Au Pit will be dictated by the effectiveness of the placer gold processing
portion of the operation. It is anticipated that 150,000-300,000 tons of material will be excavated
and processed each year. Most of that material will be replaced into the excavation hole as part of
reclamation. Roughly 150,000 tons of that material (100,000 CY) will be sold offsite for
construction materials, but this will vary based on market conditions. The timetable shown below is
based on these numbers.
Table D-2 Mining Timetable
Fairplay Air Pit March 2017 D-2 c"z LcwkU and Au"i.k& w.i c
