Keenesburg Mine 2016 Vegetation Monitoring Report
season perennial grasses which comprised over 72% of the relative cover, while warm season
species comprised only 7.8% (Table 18). This result was unexpected given the seed mixture used
and the general trends in this region. However, May of 2007 (the first growing season for this
site) experienced precipitation that was 186% of average which may have resulted in a flush of
cool season grass germination. The subsequent years slowly brought the ratio back to what was
anticipated in the seed mixture by 2012. However, the cool season perennial grasses have
continued to decline in this reclamation area and were not recorded at all in the 2016 cover data.
The overall trends on this area are similar to those described for Reclamation Area 29. However,
the pre -emergent herbicide application in 2015 does not appear to have impacted the cheatgrass
cover which increased from 9.2% in 2015 to 24.6% in 2016 nor the annual introduced forbs
which also increased from 3.0% to 14%.
Tahle 1 R- Reelamntinn Area 30 Relative Cover Trends 2009 - 2016
Life Form
2009
2010
Relative Cover
2011 2012
2014
2015
1 2016
Warm Season Perennial Grasses
7.8
17.9
39.6
65.9
28.9
42.2
19.2
Cool Season Perennial Grasses
72.8
34.2
20.7
24.0
1.0
0.6
Perennial Native Forbs
0.3
1.2
2.1
2.2
Annual Native Forbs
2.3
1 0.9
7.5
6.9
12.2
7.8
Annual Native Grass
1.2
0.3
1.8
2.4
8.3
2.6
Annual Introduced Forbs
6.4
6.4
19.2
24.1
8.3
22.7
Cheatgrass
9.3
40.3
11.7
8.4 1
34.7
1 26.1
47.7
Figure 8: Reclamation Area 30 Absolute Cover 2009 - 2016
60.0
50.0
0
a
40.0
0
U 30.0
CO 20.0
10.0
2009 2010 2011
■ Perennial Native Warm Grass
■ Perennial Native Forbs
■ Annual Native Grass
■ Cheatgrass
2012 2014 2015 2016
■ Perennial Native Cool Grass
n Annual Native Forbs
■ Annual Introduced Forbs
Habitat Management, Inc. 27 October 2016
