PART 3 — EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL
A. Construct straight joints; make vertical or horizontal, except where walls intersect sloping
floors.
B. Commence concrete placement after the joint preparation is complete.
3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION
A. Construction Joints:
1. Remove all laitance, and foreign substances (including curing compound) from:
concrete surface, water stop, and reinforcing steel.
2. Roughen concrete surface to a minimum of'/ -inch amplitude:
a. Sandblast after the concrete has fully cured.
b. Water blast after the concrete has partially cured.
c. Green cut fresh concrete with high pressure water and hand tools.
d. Protect water stop from damage, if one is present.
3. Wash surfaces with clean water.
4. Coat surfaces with an epoxy bonding compound prepared and applied as
recommended by the manufacturer.
B. Expansion Joint with Pourable Filler:
1. Use motorized wire brush or other motorized device to mechanically roughen and
thoroughly clean concrete surfaces on each side of joint from plastic water stop to the
top of the joint.
2. Use clean and dry high pressure air to remove dust and foreign material, and dry
joint.
3. Prime surfaces before placing joint filler.
4. Avoid damage to water stop.
C. Expansion Joint without Pourable Filler:
1. Coat concrete surfaces above and below plastic water stop with bond breaker.
2. Do not damage water stop.
D. Control Joint.
1. Coat concrete surfaces above and below plastic water stop with bond breaker.
2. Do not damage water stop.
Expansion, Construction and Control Joints February 2017 03251-5
