3.2 INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
C. The location of every element of the surface water control systems shall be such that
interference with excavation and other construction activities is avoided to the extent
practical or otherwise minimized. Locations shall be subject to review by the Engineer.
D. When the surface water control systems do not meet the specified requirements, and as a
consequence loosening or disturbance of the subgrades, instability of the slopes or
damage to facilities, foundations or structures occurs, the Contractor shall supply all
materials, labor, and equipment, and perform all work for restoration of subgrade soils,
fill soils, slopes, facilities, foundations, or structures, to the satisfaction of the Engineer,
at no additional cost to the Owner.
3.3 INSTALLED SYSTEMS
A. Provide, operate, and maintain surface water control systems of sufficient size and
capacity to: permit excavation and subsequent construction in sufficiently dry conditions
so as to not interfere with construction of the Work in accordance with the requirements
of all relevant Specifications. Continuously maintain excavations sufficiently free of
water so as to not interfere with construction of the Work in accordance with the
requirements of all relevant Specifications, regardless of source, and until backfilled to
final grades indicated on the Drawings.
B. Surface water control systems shall be sufficient to maintain excavation and backfill
activities on a surface that is free of standing or running water from any source, whether
groundwater or surface runoff. Protect excavations and fill from surface runoff running
into the excavations.
C. Provide, operate, and maintain surface water control systems for the entire duration of the
Work, or until allowed by the Engineer to discontinue operating and maintaining the
systems.
D. In the event the that system(s) fails for any reason during excavation or backfilling
operations, immediately repair or replace the failing components of the system to avoid
damage to the existing dam embankment and other existing facilities. All work required
due to failure of the surface water control facilities shall be at the Contractor's sole
expense. The Contractor shall be prepared to immediately backfill any open excavation
with permanent Work.
3.4 DISPOSAL OF WATER
A. Discharge stormwater as required by stormwater discharge permit and Owner approval
and in a manner that will not cause erosion or flooding, or otherwise damage existing
facilities, completed Work, or adjacent property.
3.5 REMOVAL
A. All elements of the surface water control systems shall be removed from the site at the
completion of the Work
END OF SECTION 02230
Surface Water Control February 2017 02230-3
