2016 Recommended Modifications to the West Elk Mine Hydrologic Monitoring Network 12
2.1.1.4 Spring G-30
Spring G-30 is located in Gribble Gulch above Panel 8 in the Northwest B -Seam historic mine
area (Map 1) and it issues from alluvium. This spring has been monitored since 1977 and was
undermined in May 1995. The spring flow measurements were highly variable from 1977 to
1999, but measurable flow has not been observed since 2000. A time -series flow graph for
Spring G-30 is shown on Figure 7.
Figure 7. Flow in Spring G-30
Time -series water quality data from Spring G-30 are only available for field EC and field pH,
because not enough water was available for collecting laboratory samples. The field data do not
indicate any adverse trends in water quality. The field ECs for this spring for the period of
record are relatively steady, ranging from 860 to 1,120 µmhos/cm and averaging about 948
µmhos/cm. There are no baseline values for field pH for this site (WWE, 2001) for comparison;
however, laboratory pH data is available for comparison. The field pH values for this spring
over the period of record are also relatively steady, ranging from 7.43 to 8.51 s.u., and averaging
7.91 s.u. In comparison, the baseline laboratory pH values range from 7.95 to 8.1 s.u. There are
no lab data for TDS, TSS, dissolved iron, or total iron because there was not enough water to
collect samples. The time -series water quality graphs for Spring G-30 are shown in Figure 8.
August 2016 HydroGeo, Inc.
